This item is a very large celt from Western Panama. These celts are very rare and can be found from Western Panama through Guatemala. This is the only celt that I own that I did not find on Navy island in Gatun lake or from the George Chevalier collection (Madden Lake and Las Cruces Trail). It was purchased from a gallery and it includes a card that says it is from the Stonefurth collection. It is made out of dark green Jade and it is from Panama and dated 4-600 B.C. The Jade is not the high grade material that sells for huge sums of money. It looks like Basalt with a lot of Magnesium in the matrix. This type of stone is more common in Guatemala than in Panama, so maybe there was some trading going on? This celt is very large and heavy and it is probably ceremonial. It is in excellent condition and it has a highly polished surface. It is a remarkable show piece. The approximate dimensions and weight are as follows:

Length = 245 mm ; Width = 68 mm ; Thickness = 35 mm ; Weight = 944 gm
