This long distance boomerang is the first Challenger III ever made. It is a direct descendent of the Red Eagle and it is made out of plywood. There is a lead weight embedded in both blade tips. This one is painted red and white on the upper surface. At the elbow, the surface plies of the plywood on both sides has been removed and a strip of hardwood (Bubinga?) has been glued onto the surface to stiffen or strengthen the boomerang in this location. The underside has " Challenger by VB" and " First Ever Challenger About 1984-85 ; 13 ply Birch self laminated ; To Ted Bailey - with Complements!; Volker Behrens '98 " written with Volker's signature. I previously sold the first Challenger III made out of Paxolin. That was followed the development of this wooden model. This one has wear from use, but no cracks or dings or other forms of damage. I have owned this boomerang for more than 15 years and have never thrown it. It has immense collectible value because Volker only made a couple of the plywood models and they were for his personal use, so please take good care of it.
Volker Behrens was a well known commercial manufacturer of sporting and competition boomerang products. Volker was also a competitor and a member of the German International Boomerang Team. Volker was a pioneer in the development of long distance boomerangs and he demonstrated throws of 150 metres in the 1980s with his popular Challenger III Paxolin Hook. Volker made the last of his boomerang products in 2011 and he died in June, 2012. His boomerangs have become great collectibles because they are considered to be comparable to boomerangs made by Herb Smith. |
