This natural elbow was made in 1989 out of a blank (Oak?) that Volker received as a gift from Eric Darnell. The shape is a hook similar to Volker's Sunbell model. This boomerang is signed and dated 1989 and it has a high gloss finish on both surfaces. It is a jewel that Volker had listed on his website for 140 Euros, so he considered this boomerang to be one of his finest collectibles. The only reason that I started this item at a lower price is because there is a split in the wood running from the edge of the elbow to the dark colored knot near the elbow's edge. The split is the result of moisture loss and not from throwing damage. I did not test throw this boomerang, but it looks to be strong enough for throwing by a skilled thrower with finesse. I would prefer that this one be kept as a collectible. Volker did not make very many natural elbows and this is one of the nicest.
Volker Behrens was a well known commercial manufacturer of sporting and competition boomerang products. Volker was also a competitor and a member of the German International Boomerang Team. Volker was a pioneer in the development of long distance boomerangs and he demonstrated throws of 150 metres in the 1980s with his popular Challenger III Paxolin Hook. Volker made the last of his boomerang products in 2011 and he died in June, 2012. His boomerangs have become great collectibles because they are considered to be comparable to boomerangs made by Herb Smith. |
