Volker Behrens was a well known commercial manufacturer of sporting and competition boomerang products. Volker was also a competitor and a member of the German International Boomerang Team. Volker was a pioneer in the development of long distance boomerangs and he demonstrated throws of 150 metres in the 1980s with his popular Challenger III Paxolin Hook. Volker made the last of his boomerang products in 2011 and he died in June, 2012. His boomerangs have become great collectibles because they are considered to be comparable to boomerangs made by Herb Smith. This strip laminated large hook was made out of a Thomas Münch Oak blank. There is a single half weight in the dingle arm tip and three half weights in the lift arm tip. The construction looks very similar to that of strip laminated boomerangs made by Al Gerhards. The trailing edges of the blades have undercutting to increase the range and make this a long distance model. I am unable to test throw this boomerang because of vision problems and I am a lefty, but Volker told me that this was one of his favorite models and it had a flight range exceeding 100 metres. It might require some fine tuning or added weights with tape or flaps to adjust the flight for your own throwing style. There is light wear and patina on the blade tips and no cracks or chips. There is some undercutting of the trailing edge for flight tuning after the initial oil coat was applied to the surfaces. |
