This replica of a Herb Smith hook was made in the early 1990s out of 3.5 mm Paxolin and painted on both surfaces. Volker wrote "Herb Smith Sussex Hook" on the underside of the dingle arm. This was an experimental design when Volker started to make replicas of Herb Smith's longer range models. It was never a regular production model. I acquired it from Volker on one of his visits to the USA in the early 1990s. It was in Volker's personal throw kit. I found that it was a high performance design with a flight range of 50+ metres and a low and circular flight. It also had excellent wind resistance and did not require a lot of power to achieve this performance. Volker traded it to me for one of my MTAs. It has lived in my personal throw kit for 30+ years and it was one of my favorite boomerangs. It has a few light scratches as shown in the photos, but no damage. One of my favorite boomerangs to throw in wind or calm.
Volker Behrens was a well known commercial manufacturer of sport and competition boomerang products. Volker was also a competitor and a member of the German International Boomerang Team. Volker was a pioneer in the development of long distance boomerangs and he demonstrated throws of 150 metres in the 1980s with his popular Challenger III Paxolin Hook. Volker made the last of his boomerangs in 2011. He died in June, 2012. His boomerangs have become great collectibles because they are considered to be comparable to boomerangs made by Herb Smith. |
