This beautiful natural elbow was made in 1985 out of a Deep Vee natural elbow. The wood species is not printed on this boomerang, but I remember Ray told me in the mid 1980s that he had found a very large elbow of Spalted Dogwood. I think this boomerang was made from that elbow. If it is not Dogwood, then it has a similar grain. This is one of the nicest boomerangs in my collection. The workmanship is exceptional. The surfaces are smooth and polished and with only minor natural wood flaws as shown in the photos below.
Ray Rieser was one of the hardest working administrators in the formative years of the United States Boomerang Association. Ray was USBA treasurer and the MHR newsletter editor and production manager. Ray was also a collector of both contemporary and antique boomerangs. He has one of the finest collections anywhere. Ray made very few boomerangs, but the ones that he made were fantastic. I have only two in my personal collection and they are not for sale at any price. Ray dropped out of the boomerang movement in the mid to late 1980s, but the work that he did was essential to the success of the USBA over the next two decades. |
