This vintage traditional boomerang was made by Bill McGovern of Scotland in the late 1960s or early 1970s. It is similar in design to Herb Smith's longer range models and it has two weights in each blade tip, but it is smaller and weighs less than Herb's traditional boomerangs. The upper surface has inked art that includes a kangaroo on the elbow. The underside of the elbow is signed with " Bill McGovern " etched into the surface. At one time, there must have been 3 weights in each tip because one hole in each tip is filled in with wood putty. There is a collection tag on the underside. This boomerang came from the Max Hoeben collection. This boomerang takes a hard throw and lots of spin. The flight range is approximately 25 metres. Very good condition and one of the better McGovern boomerangs. A rare collectible.
Bill McGovern was a very early thrower and boomerang manufacturer from Scotland. He was making and throwing boomerangs before well known throwers like Michael Hanson and Herb Smith. Bill was a close friend of Michael and Herb as well as other European throwers, like Max Hoeben and Wilhelm Bretfeld. Bill was an active member of British Boomerang Society from its formation until Bill;s death in 1991. Very few of Bill's boomerangs survive. He did not market them, but he gave them to his throwing companions. |
