Jack Byham was one of Australia's most well known
boomerang manufacturers. He was a real 'Crocodile Dundee'
who spent a lot of time with the Aborigines. Jack made
boomerangs and throwsticks using traditional Aboriginal
methods and many of his products are mistaken for Aboriginal
artifacts. Jack is most famous for his commercial boomerang
products that spanned a half century from the Olympic Games
in Melbourne (1956) through the 1990s. Jack made exceptional
throwsticks and natural elbow boomerangs that are in high
demand by Australian collectors. This very large boomerang was made out of a natural elbow
from a nearly flawless piece of Mulga hardwood. The upper
surface was decorated by Jack Byham with pyrographic
Aboriginal art, similar to that of what is found on
Aboriginal boomerangs from the Yalata Mission. This is
probably the most valuable boomerang ever made by Jack
Byham. At the conclusion of the 1981 USA/Australia, Jack
went out of his way to make this boomerang as a special gift
for David McNamee of Uncle Toby's Oats in appreciation for
his sponsorship of the first international competition. The
upper suface has the words " Made Expressly For David
McNamee Uncle Toby's Oats in Appreciation ". The underside
has the inscription " Mulga Jack Byham Pres. BAA Cobram 1982
". What a wonderful piece of history and a beautiful
collectable.
