This strip laminated "U" shape was made out of Basswood in 1988. It is the second of the 3 two bladed Fast Catch models made by Doug DuFresne. Basswood has a very low density and this helps to reduce the range to 20 metres with a quick gyroscopic precession rate of rotation. Doug has an Engineering background and it was well designed for flight performance. The cord thickness is constant along the entire length and there are two plastic bands wrapped around the elbow to guard against delamination of the elbow. I only threw this one a few times before retiring it to my collection box. I am left handed and blind in one eye, but I had no problem doing a round of Fast Catch under 20 seconds. It was almost too fast for me to handle. This boomerang is in new condition. This was one of Doug's most popular competition models and it was one of the few two bladed Fast Catch boomerangs that was competitive against the popular tri-bladers used in the late 1980s. A really great collectible with historical significance.
Doug DuFresne was one of America's best known boomerang manufacturers in the 1980s and 1990s. Doug manufactured a line of high quality Birch plywood and strip laminated boomerangs that were consistently wonderful flyers. Most strip laminated boomerangs were made out of Cherry and/or Ash. The manufacturing tolerances were as tight as you would see on an automotive product. Doug stopped producing boomerangs in the late 1990s and the price of his boomerangs increased dramatically. Doug was one of America's top throwers and a member of the American boomerang team during the formation of the United States Boomerang Association. Doug was also active in the formulation of the USBA competition rule book in the mid 1980s. |
