This medium size traditional boomerang was made out of 5 mm Birch plywood by Jerry Caplan in the mid 1980s. The upper surface is decorated with multiple Queen of Hearts. The lower surface has " To Ted, Mr. M.T.A., Jerry Caplan. This is the only art traditional I have seen by Jerry. Slightly used and in excellent condition. This boomerang is a very good flyer with a flight range of 35 metres. The flight is low and it takes a bit of layover for a proper flight. A wonderful collectible.
Jerry Caplan was one of the original USA Boomerang Team members and he competed on the winning team in the 1981 USA/Aussie Challenge Match in Australia. Jerry was famous for throwing two boomerangs at the same time - one in his left hand and one in his right hand. Jerry was also a consultant in Hollywood. He taught the feral child in the first road Warrior movie to throw and he supplied the movie set with a Hawes M-17, painted silver as a movie prop. Jerry also introduced Hollywood to Alan Scott Craig who starred in the famous German production movie - Bagdad Cafe. Jerry organized the 1985 USBA Nationals in Los Angeles and this was one of my favorite tournaments. After I came out with the Midi MTAs in 1985, Jerry flew to Toledo Ohio to learn how to tune and throw this new kind of boomerang. There were 5 or 6 visiting competitors at the time and everybody was able to achieve flights in excess of one minute. After Jerry had his 1+ minute flight, he got so excited that I had to take him to my home. Jerry gave me his favorite Gerhards traditional as a thank you gift and he was so hyper that he cooked enough blueberry pancakes to feed an army. Jerry always had this level of energy and everybody liked him. Jerry made very few boomerangs and they were never for sale. They were occasionally given to friends. Great flyers and wonderful collectibles. |
