This beautiful art boomerang was made out of 6.2 mm Aussie plywood and air brushed with art depicting Halley's Comet and a sea of stars. The word "HALLEYS" is painted on the lift arm. There is a small lead weight on each blade tip and a third weight on the lift arm near the elbow. The underside has "Made by Rod Jones - Aust. Halley's Hook - 86". I acquired this art boomerang directly from Rod Jones in 1986. A very attractive collectible in new condition.
Rod Jones was recognized in the early 1980s as a manufacturer of high performance sport boomerangs with beautiful art. His boomerangs were painted with air brush art and finished with a high gloss coating that made his boomerangs glow like jewels. Prices were high and buyers didn't like to throw them for fear of damaging the art and high gloss finish. Rod also made boomerangs for competition events. His competition boomerangs included MTA, Doublers, Fast Catch and Aussie Round models. The MTA was laminated on a jig with a spherical surface to build in tune as he laminated 6 to 10 thin layers of hardwood to make the blank. This was important because the boomerang flight behaves like a spherical pendulum in motion. Al Gerhards is the only other boom maker who used a spherical shell to make his boomerangs and Al used his spherical shell to tune, not to laminate his blanks. In the 1990s, Rod quit making boomerangs and he took up fishing as a hobby. It has been almost 30 years since any of his art boomerangs have been sold commercially, so they have become valuable collectibles. |
