This vintage hook boomerang was made by Bill McGovern of Scotland in the mid 1970s using a hook pattern supplied by Max Hoeben. The upper surface has inked art that includes three kangaroos on the elbow. The underside has " Made by Bill McGovern, Edinburgh, Scotland from a pattern supplied by Max Hoeben, Amstelveen Holland " written in ink. This boomerang came from the Max Hoeben collection and it has one of Max Hoeben's stars indicating that it was one of his favorite boomerangs. This boomerang takes a hard throw and lots of spin. The flight range is 40+ metres. I gave it several test throws before listing it and found that it is a very good flyer. It is also in very nice condition and one of the best McGovern boomerangs I have seen. A rare collectible.
Bill McGovern was a very early thrower and boomerang manufacturer from Scotland. He was making and throwing boomerangs before well known throwers like Michael Hanson and Herb Smith. Bill was a close friend of Michael and Herb as well as other European throwers, like Max Hoeben and Wilhelm Bretfeld. Bill was an active member of British Boomerang Society from its formation until Bill;s death in 1991. Very few of Bill's boomerangs survive. He did not market them, but he gave them to his throwing companions. |
