Ray Rieser was one of the hardest working administrators
in the formative years of the United States Boomerang
Association. Ray was USBA treasurer and the MHR newsletter
editor and production manager. Ray was also a collector of
both contemporary and antique boomerangs. He has one of the
finest collections anywhere. Ray made very few boomerangs,
but the ones that he made were fantastic. I have only two in
my personal collection and they are not for sale at any
price. Ray dropped out of the boomerang movement in the mid
to late 1980s, but the work that he did was essential to the
success of the USBA over the next two decades. This item is a cherrywood natural elbow boomerang in the
shape of Eric Darnell's Wizard. This is the name that Eric
used for this shape before he mass produced the popular
proFly. This boomerang is finely sanded and it has wonderful
airfoiling. It has a gun oil finish which is somewhat dull
because it hasn't been oiled in more than 20 years. It is
not signed, but I will personally guarantee that this is a
Ray Rieser natural elbow because I have a matching one from
the same elbow in my personal collection. This elbow is in
very good condition. The trailing edges have a couple of
very shallow blemishes that can be sanded out, but I would
leave this one alone. One other note is that in order to
obtain this shape, Ray had to make an elbow out of a piece
of Cherry where a branch came out of a tree. The interface
between the two blades is not a strong as it would be if it
were made out of a solid branch, so please go easy with it
if you decide to throw it. This is not the kind of boomerang
that you would want to power throw into the ground. A
wonderful and very rare collectable!
