This lap joint boomerang with a hook shape was made out of two different hardwoods: Curly Koa and Blistered Mahogany. Blistered Mahogany is a very rare and expensive variation of Mahogany and the grain is striking. I highly recommend that the owner oil the surfaces to bring out the natural beauty of this wood. Curly Koa is a rather high grade of this tropical hardwood from Hawaii. Both woods have similar densities. This boomerang has Dr. Fred's footprint logo written in silver ink on the underside of the elbow and it is dated 1994. It is in excellent condition and a fine collectable.
Dr. Fred Malmberg was a Podiatrist from Eastern Pennsylvania who made boomerangs for more than 25 years. Fred's specialty was making boomerangs out of exotic hardwoods. He often made boomerangs out of aircraft grade Birch plywood with veneers of exotic wood species on the upper and lower surfaces. Fred sanded the surfaces with a cascade of sandpapers and finishing up with an extremely fine grit that put a super smooth surface on the finished boomerang. Fred usually added oil to the surface for protection and to add a shine. These boomerangs also fly really well and Fred's boomerangs command higher prices because of the workmanship. Very few are offered for sale, so they are rather difficult to find collectibles. |
