Jim Mayfield became interested in boomerangs in the mid
1980s. He travelled to boomerang tournaments to compete and
collect boomerangs from other top competitors. Jim learned
how to make his own rather quickly. He began manufacturing
his own boomerangs at his Gunnison Colorado home in the
early 1990s. A few years after forming Colorado Boomerangs,
Jim sold his company to Richard Pollock-Nelson. Jim worked
with Richard after the sale to make sure that the quality of
Colorado Boomerang products remained high after his
departure. Jim Mayfield was critically injured in a
motorcycle accident on 11 October 1999 and died two weeks
later at the age of 48, leaving a wife and four young
children. Today, Jim's business is still thriving, even
though Colorado Boomerangs is on its third owner. This boomerang is the original " Hook " . It has two
small lead weights in each tip and attractive art on the
upper surface. Jim Mayfield's signature and the date of
manufacture (5 March 1993) was written in blue ink on the
underside. This weighted hook is an terrific flyer with a
flight range of about 60 metres. It takes a harder throw
than most of the other Colorado Boomerangs because of the
extended range. After you throw it a few times, you will
understand why the old original boomerangs are in such high
demand. The current production manufacturing process does
not capture the magic of the original Mayfield airfoiling
and tuning. This one is in very good condition. It has a few
light scratches and very light patina from handling. A
wonderful sports boomerang and a great collectable.
