Jim Mayfield became interested in boomerangs in the mid
1980s. He travelled to boomerang tournaments to compete and
collect boomerangs from other top competitors. Jim learned
how to make his own rather quickly. He began manufacturing
his own boomerangs at his Gunnison Colorado home in the
early 1990s. A few years after forming Colorado Boomerangs,
Jim sold his company to Richard Pollock-Nelson. Jim worked
with Richard after the sale to make sure that the quality of
Colorado Boomerang products remained high after his
departure. Jim Mayfield was critically injured in a
motorcycle accident on 11 October 1999 and died two weeks
later at the age of 48, leaving a wife and four young
children. Today, Jim's business is still thriving, even
though Colorado Boomerangs is on its third owner. This boomerang is the original " Delicate Arch " . It has
a small lead weight in each tip and attractive art on the
upper surface. Jim Mayfield's signature and the date of
manufacture (11 Jan 1993) was written in blue ink on the
underside. This Delicate Arch is an excellent flyer with a
flight range of about 45 metres. The flight is higher and
more elliptical than the same model in production today.
After you throw it a few times, you will understand why the
old original boomerangs are in such high demand. The current
production manufacturing process does not capture the magic
of original Mayfield airfoiling and tuning. This one is in
very good condition. It has some light patina from use. A
wonderful sports boomerang and a terrific collectable.
