Ben Dehner made beautiful strip laminated boomerangs in
his home in Atchison, Kansas back in the 1980s. The
technique that he used for his earliest ones was to glue the
strips and then wrap rubber strips cut from an inner tube
around the pieces until they dried. The early models were
made out of a very light hardwood (spruce) strips, making
them almost too light for sports throwing by adult throwers.
The later models were made with heavier hardwoods, such as
Mahogany and Ash and thee boomerangs were wonderful sporting
boomerangs that were both functional and very attractive.
Ben has not produced any boomerangs commercially for almost
two decades, so his models have become quite collectable,
especially the models made in the late 1980s that are still
in excellent condition. This Dehner strip laminated omega boomerang is made out
of alternating strips af Mahogany and Ash(?). There is a
"Ben Dehner" logo on the elbow and a hand stamp on the
underside that says " Handcrafted by Ben Dehner ". This is
one of the better Dehner boomerangs. The shape is almost
identical to that of the Al Gerhards omega, but I am sure
that this is only a coincidence and not direct copy. This
boomerang is made out of the heavier hardwoods and is in
excellent condition.
