This Sacred Churinga was made by Aborigines out of stone. It is polished and decorated with Aboriginal totemic figures. The churinga was rubbed with ochre. There is a chip in the stone at both ends and a rough edge on one side. This is visible in the photos. Overall, this churinga is still in very good condition. Stone churinga are very rare. A Central Desert churinga ( tjurunga ) is a sacred object which represents the ancestral and individual spirit of its owner. Each tribe is divided into totems related to animals, plants or objects, and the legends and relationship of each totemic group are recorded on the churinga. They were present among the Arrernte, the Luritja, the Kaitish, the Unmatjera, and the Illpirra tribal groups. These items are most commonly oblong pieces of polished stone or wood. During the early 20th century and before, only initiated males were able to see or touch these sacred objects. Women and uninitiated males were not allowed to touch them or see them, except from a far distance. The tjurunga were kept separately from the rest of the clan in a sacred location that was also unavailable to the uninitiated and women. |
