This large hunting boomerang, (throwstick) was made out of Mulga, a dense hardwood found in the Central Desert of Australia. The upper surface has longitudinal fluting along the entire length, except for the extreme end of both blade tips. The lower surface has a shallow rough hewn adze finish. Both surfaces have a shiny finish as a result of kangaroo fat rubbed over the red ochre to preserve the surface texture and color. It was probably made in the late 19th or early 20th Century. I acquired this boomerang in 1991 from the Barclay Gallery in Michigan.

This boomerang is in very nice condition. There is no damage and the original surface is fully intact. There are multiple very small natural wood imperfections, but none of these affects the strength or beauty. A very nice example of a Central Desert throw stick.
