This hunting boomerang, or throwstick was made out of Mulga, a dense desert hardwood. I acquired this boomerang in 1983 from Ben Ruhe, a collector who had worked for the Smithsonian Insitute in the 1970s. This is a nicely constructed slender boomerang made in the 1940s for Aboriginal use. Because of its size, it was either used by a young hunter in training or for throwing at birds. Both sides are scraped smooth and there is an attractive rippling effect on the surfaces due to moisture loss over many decades. There is no damage from use. A very nice artifact in excellent condition. |
