This white marble figure was purchased by Ben Ruhe on Paros Island (Greece) in the Eastern Aegean. This is a replica of a Cycladic figure. The original was found in an ancient Greek tomb and dating to about 2500 B.C (pre-Bronze age). These Madonnas were ritual fertility objects. This contemporary copy does double duty as a phallus. Original Cycladic figures often sell for more than $100,000. Many contemporary artists took inspiration from these Cycladic figures, including Madigliani, Picaso, etc. Please see the photo below for more details. |
