This unusual atlatl is from Mexico. It was acquired from Lacandon Indians in the state of Chiapas. It does look like it was made for the tourist industry? The original owner collected it shortly after the end of World War II. The body of the atlatl is made entirely of a light weight wood, probably Mahogany. The spur is much larger than what you typically find in atlatl construction. The dart has fletching and a sharpened point. The butt of the dart is recessed and it fits nicely into the point of the spur. The fletching is in poor condition, but the dart is otherwise in very good condition. It is unusual to find Mexican atlatls. It is not an ancient Aztec artifact, but it is a Native American product made for the tourist industry.

Atlatl Length = 55 cm ; Weight = 184 gm

Dart Length = 80 cm ; Weight = 90 gm
