This is a Central African Azande or Ngombe (Bangi) Slaver's Sword. This type of sword is from the Congo region of Africa and it was made in the early to mid19th Century. This sword was used with a small hand shield and it was functional on both the forward and back slash. I purchased this sword in 1985 from William Fagan & Company. The blade is made out of well forged steel and the shape is similar to that of a returning boomerang with an elongated triangular form at the terminal. The steel blade is sharpened on both sides and both sides have decorative chissel marks. One side has a channel or groove running down the center from the hub to the base of the triangular section. The wooden handle has two conical disk segments with a knob terminus. The wooden grip is attached to the root of the blade with a tightly wrapped steel strap. Very nice and with no damage except for a tiny edge chip near the inside edge corner. Very rare type of slaver's sword and an excellent collectable. |
