This artifact is a wooden sword from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territories of Australia. The sword is similar to the spear points that are more common from this region, but the base is rectangular instead of round and it is finished on the end face. There is a single point on the end and the sides are carved with repeated serations similar to the swords made by cutting off the bills of small swordfish. Nicely decorated on both sides with multicolored pigments. The white ochre at the point is flaking off with approximately 50% of the ochre pigment remaining. Some of the serations on the side of the sword have been broken off as shown in the photos. I purchased this from the Barclay Gallery in the early 1980s, so I have owned it for nearly 4 decades. The catalog description said it was 19th Century. A very nice uncommon artifact in remarkably good condition. |
