This item is a very old hardwood club from Victoria. This is a very unusual type of club with an expansion on both ends. One end has a smooth taper towards the point and the other end has a deeply incised spiral taper, very much like what you would find in a contemporary sheet metal screw. The Wood is very dark and it has a similar density as you would find on hardwood clubs from New South Wales. I purchased this club at the Barclay Gallery in 1990 and it was marked as being from Victoria. It is possible that it is from New South Wales instead of Victoria. I cannot find any reference material to this style of club in my literature or on the internet. It is obviously a very rare type of Australian Aboriginal club. There is a gentle curvature to the axis of the shaft. The end with the smooth point has minor blunting on the end as you find on almost all clubs from this period. There is a small pit near the end that is filled in with something that appears to be white paint. There is also a shallow age split that runs axially from the base of the spiral end to the midpoint of the shaft. This is a natural age split and not the result of any damage from use. A very nice and rare Aboriginal club that is also very old. |
