Prior to his death, Brother Brian Thomas made a list of his many boomerang awards and accomplishments. The list in it's entirety follows. Brian we are proud of everything that you did.

First boomerang a Lin Onus bought in Devonport, Tasmania, in August 1972 from Merv Burke, new agent, father of three boys I taught. First attempts to throw it were with old boys Noel Caynes (RIP), Philip Robinson & young siblings. Could only manage it back one-third of the way. Bought second one from Merv, a Hawes Super Looper, which worked very well. Bought further Hawes boomerangs, till moving to Albury in July 1973. Then purchased Lewry hooks, which were used for competition throwing. Jeff told me about Les and Arthur Janetzki throwing at Hovell Tree Park each Saturday, where I met them and became life long friends. We threw on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons.

First competition was in Canberra at Southwell Park on 21st April, 1974. 20 throwers. Came 5th in Aussie Round with 31. (Jeff Lewry 81, Carol Lewry 70, Geoff Kennedy 41, Billy Knight 34, Bunny Read 30, Bruce Kyle 28.) Cold, wet & very windy conditions. Shortest Time for 10 catches: Bunny Read 2 mins 53 secs. Consecutive catch: Carol Lewry 2. Most Accurate Return; Geoff Kennedy 435 mm

In 1978 sport recognised by Federal Government and Morris Maxwell and I attended courses run by the Confederation of Australian Sport at the University of Sydney in June 1978. After attending the three day coaching sessions I became the Australian National Boomerang Coach. On returning to Albury our plane (Focker Friendship) crash-landed blowing tires on the right side and we finished up stuck in the mud off the runway for an hour. No one was injured.

1978 I taught Tony Greig to throw boomerangs at St. Patrick's back ground, while he was running a cricket film for the boys and girls. He threw well, but could not catch one. Took four photos. This was covered some years later in the Woman's Day magazine with photos taken at North Sydney.

1981 I was Captain and Coach of the first Australian Test Team which threw against the USA in Tests in Melbourne, Albury and Sydney. I was also part of the Albury Team, captained by Les and Arthur Janetzki, which beat the USA (the only team to do so on the tour).

1982-3 President of the Boomerang Association of Australia.

1983 Barrie Forsyth & I taught boomerang throwing in Yokkaichi City, Japan, in August. Trip sponsored by Japanese millionaires who attended our City of Sydney Championships at Beauchamp Park, Sydney, to assess the sport. Most dealings were done through Mr.Washino. Interpreters were Brian & Chiemi Keniry.

1984 Coached the Australian Team, which went to America and won back the Cup. Australian Champion at the Nationals at Albury.

1985 Did course in Rome and then took part in 6th Annual German Championships at Mainz. 4th Over-all (about 90 there) and won best non-German thrower. Australian Team (Br.Rod Shoebridge, Br.Vin Hawley, Peter & Joan Byham and me) won Team Relay.

I was the Australian Referee for the first World Cup in Barooga. Doug DuFresne (USA) and Inge Enwerden, Dutch woman, were the other two referees. Seven countries threw with three man teams. Australia 2nd to USA. This was in 1988, our Bi-Centennial Year.

1981 Editor of the Boomerang Bulletin.

1994-2001 Editor of Boomerang Bulletin.

1998 July : Member of the Australian Boomerang Team, Australia Old & New, at the World Boomerang Cup at St.Louis, U.S.A. Kevin Moran (69) captain. Also Miles Jorgensen (58), Gunter Wandtke (40), Craig Carter (11) and Trent Carter (8). I was 59. Other team was Australian Aristocrats. Aristocrats were our sponsors with $25,000. 18 teams there.

2000 February: World Cup in Melbourne at the La Trobe University. 15 teams with Australia having 2. I was coach of Aussie Fever 1 (David Schummy, Adam Carroll, Roger Perry, Ian Sproul, Glen Lee & Joshua Smith). I opened the World Cup by throwing our the famous King Billy Hook (made about 1850), which is owned by Ralph Sinclair. Chet Snouffer caught it.

2000 April 1st. Made TV show for Olympic preparation in USA for kids' show. A 10 part series showing Australian life to USA kids. Held afternoon tea for Jacques Thomas at 17 Comer Street, Burwood, so members could meet and talk to him. (Ken & Ada, Gunter, AJ, David Schummy)

2000 April 2nd. Jacques Thomas of France here. Presented trophies at the Eastern Suburbs competitions (wet day). Special Jacques Thomas Trophy for Nearest the Pin in Boomerang Making Accuracy competition. Won by David Schummy who threw three 10s. Boomerangs made were smaller versions of Jacques Mk 1 traditional boomerang.

2000-1 April 29th elected President of BAA.

2001 I stepped down as President. Morris Maxwell made President. I remained as Editor of the Boomerang Bulletin.

SPECIAL NOTE

Before 1983 we only had four scoring circles, and maximum distance points were for 40 metres. So your top score in Aussie Round for five throws was 80, and in Accuracy 40.

From 1983 onwards it was five circles, plus distance points for 50 metres, so your Aussie Round score could be 100 and Accuracy 50. Morris Maxwell planned this system.

State bodies started with the formation of the Boomerang Throwing Association of NSW. The Constitution for this was drawn up by Tony Butz in 1982. This was to give more autonomy to states to decide what they would do within their own boundaries, such as what competitions they wished to run that would suit the age group and condition of their throwers. Some states had older throwers, while others were much younger and more energetic. The important thing is to keep people interested, so it is best to do the events that appeal to them most. The World Cup should not be the dominating factor in determining our local competitions.
